LARNED — Fort Larned National Historic Site invites the public to start the weekend beside a crackling fire by joining the Campfire Program at the fort tonight from 8:30-9:30 p.m. Bring your own chair, bug spray, and flashlight for an evening examining the nocturnal creatures that call Kansas home. The program will be canceled in case of inclement weather.
Fort Larned National Historic Site will offer living history on Labor Day weekend.
Staff and volunteers will bring Fort Larned alive for one last time this summer, allowing visitors to experience the sights, sounds and smells of a working frontier fort. On Saturday, Sunday and Monday, Sept. 4-6, staff and volunteers will be dressed in period clothing to bring back the days when Fort Larned was an active Army post. Guests can visit with soldiers in the barracks and ladies on Officers’ Row, and watch the blacksmith use fire and an anvil to forge iron into everyday objects.
Centers for Disease Control guidance for COVID precautions will be followed to allow for safe participation for attendees.
Fort Larned National Historic Site is located 6 miles west of Larned on K-156. Hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily.
