Lartz offers program on Native American graves and the Great Bend Aspect

Barton County Historical Society Director Richard Lartz will present “The Native American Graves and Repatriation Act and The Great Bend Aspect,” at 7 p.m., Monday, April 24 at the Barton County Historical Society, 85 S. Highway 281, Great Bend. Admission is free for members of the society and $5 for others wishing to attend the program. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the program will begin at 7 p.m. Light refreshments will be provided.

The Great Bend Aspect is the designation for proto-historic Wichita sites in central and southern Kansas, dating from A.D. 1425 to 1700.

Lartz has a Master of Arts in Public History from the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee and has experience at museums in Wisconsin, Wyoming and Kansas that have a variety of Native American artifacts in their collections. The program will give an overview of NAGPRA, discuss a unique feature of The Great Bend Aspect, and consider potential issues in regard to NAGPRA guidelines. 

The Barton County Historical Society is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and, starting April 15, from 1-4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
