We have so many events going on this month. Hope you’ve made some of them!
Coming up at 5:30 p.m. on Oct. 29 Chris Rippel will be doing a workshop on Excel.
Donna Krug will be here at 5:30 p.m. on Nov. 7 to offer a workshop on “Raising Healthy Eaters.” The workshop will focus on teaching young children healthy food habits, especially if the child is finicky.
Baby and Me is offered at 10:30 a.m. each Wednesday. Some people don’t think babies need to be read to, but they will listen with rapt attention by age six weeks. And, they can listen for 20 minutes.
So, if you haven’t begun reading to your baby by then, you’re missing a window of opportunity for them to learn about words and to interact in a positive way.
If you’re looking for a great Facebook book club, PBS Readers’ Club offers recommendations on mostly fiction books. There are also some nonfiction books recommended.
We have added many new books. Some of them are:
“The Long Call” Ann Cleeves
North Devon, where two rivers converge and run into the sea, Detective Matthew Venn stands outside the church as his father’s funeral takes place. Once loved and cherished, the day Matthew left the strict evangelical community he grew up in, he lost his family too. Now, as he turns and walks away again, he receives a call from one of his team. A body has been found on the beach nearby: a man with a tattoo of an albatross on his neck, stabbed to death. The case calls Matthew back into the community he thought he had left behind, as deadly secrets hidden at its heart are revealed, and his past and present collide.
“Wildfire” Ann Cleeves
The Netflix show “Shetland” is based upon these books. Hoping for a fresh start, an English family moves to the remote Shetland islands, eager to give their autistic son a better life. But when a young nanny’s body is found hanging in the barn beside their home, rumors of her affair with the husband spread like wildfire. As suspicion and resentment of the family blazes in the community, Detective Inspector Jimmy Perez is called in to investigate. He knows it will mean his boss, Willow Reeves, returning to run the investigation, and confronting their complex relationship. With families fracturing and long-hidden lies emerging, Jimmy faces the most disturbing case of his career.
“The Secrets We Kept” Lara Prescott
A tale of spycraft, love and sacrifice inspired by the true story of Doctor Zhivago follows the efforts of two CIA agents to help publish Boris Pasternak’s censored masterpiece against a backdrop of Cold War politics in Moscow.
“Willful Behavior” Donna Leon
Guido Brunetti investigates a string of deaths that seem to involve an extraordinary art collection and Italian Nazi collaborators.
“The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek” Kim Richardson
Cussy Mary Carter is the last of her kind, her skin the color of a blue damselfly in these dusty hills. But that doesn’t mean she’s got nothing to offer. As a member of the Pack Horse Library Project, Cussy delivers books to the hill folk of Troublesome, hoping to spread learning in these desperate times. But not everyone is so keen on Cussy’s family or the Library Project, and the hardscrabble Kentuckians are quick to blame a Blue for any trouble in their small town. “The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek” is a story of raw courage, fierce strength, and one woman’s determination to bring a little bit of hope to the darkly hollers.
