The exhibit “Roaming House, A Journey Home,” featuring paintings by Joey Embers, opens today at the Deines Center

RUSSELL — The Deines Cultural Center in Russell is hosting a reception to open an exhibit featuring McPherson County native Joey Embers on Friday, Nov. 19 from 5-7 p.m.

“Roaming House, A Journey Home” features paintings selected from a larger work of the same name. Embers, who now lives in Topeka, began the project in 2014 that depicts a singular house suspended in a shifting landscape of time and emotions.

Using bold vibrant colors and a wide range of marks, Ember leads the viewer on a journey through a surreal mindscape. The viewer is made to wonder what happens when we hit pause, or roll time back?

The composition of each painting starts to reveal a dialogue between each of them. If you change the order and the relationships of the paintings, they will tell a different story.

In 2001 Embers received a BA in Studio Art from Bethany College. It’s during this time that he found passion for learning and a strong sense of identity with a paint brush in hand and usually a charcoal smeared face.

An opening reception will be held from 5-7 p.m. today at the Deines Cultural Center, 820 N Main Street. Embers’ exhibition will be in the Deines gallery until Jan. 5, 2022.

The Deines is open from noon to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday; 1-5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
