Self-care is more crucial than ever

You have heard a lot about “self-care” during the past year. It is easy to get overloaded with news accounts that we really have no control over. Now, more than ever, people are hoping to find a way to cope with the feelings of anxiousness and uncertainty. It is a good time to explore how meditation and simple exercises can help clear your mind and energize your body. 

We have a “Mindful Meditation and Do-In” class that is set to begin Sept. 28th at the Great Bend Activity Center, located at 2715 18th Street. The three week-long class will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 – 11 a.m. through Oct. 14th. The class that I enjoy leading with my husband, John, opens with a short meditation, followed by exercises. Do-In (pronounced doe-een) exercises are exercises for health. These exercises are suitable for older adults and anyone who is dealing with a chronic condition. The exercises stimulate the energy flow along the acupuncture meridians. The focus is on imagery, breathing and relaxation when performing the Do-In exercises. 

During our first session I will introduce participants to a fact sheet I wrote a couple of years ago. The “Everyday Mindfulness” fact sheet offers the following benefits that come from a regular meditation practice:

• Increased ability to relax

• Improved concentration

• Increased energy and enthusiasm for life

• Increased creativity

• Increased self-awareness

• Improved self-esteem

• Improved work/school performance

There is a $10 fee that may be paid at the Cottonwood Extension Office in Great Bend before the first session Sept. 28th. Class size is limited so call our office at 620-793-1910 to sign up.
