Start the new year at the library

Greetings from the Great Bend Public Library! I hope everyone had a lovely holiday and is looking forward to the New Year tonight. As a reminder, the library is closed Friday, Dec. 31, and for the rest of the weekend for the holiday. We will resume normal business hours on Monday at 9 a.m.

We have some events next week to look forward to in 2022! Firstly we have Tech Tuesday, which will now be starting at 11 a.m. If you need help with a laptop tablet or maybe an e-reader, be sure to stop by for some one-on-one assistance.

Thursday our local Crochet Club will be meeting at 4 p.m. Newbies and pros alike can come chat and crochet together. Learn a new skill, jump back into an old hobby, or just join us to get some stitches in on your project in good company. Thursday we also have our next Great Bend Silver Screen Society meeting at 7 p.m. This month we will be watching and discussing the film Kon Tiki, the true story of explorer Thor Heyerdahl’s 4,300-mile trip from Peru to Polynesia. What makes the journey even more harrowing is that they made this journey on a simple balsa wood raft. Thor set out to prove his theory that Polynesia was actually settled first by South Americans in Pre-Columbian times, something thought to be impossible. Thor and several crew members put their lives on the line to test his theory in this epic adventure of survival.

Friday we have our Adults’ Night Out Movie starting at 7 p.m. Both movie events are for adults 18 and older, and, of course, we will be serving popcorn. Since these are after-hours events, patrons can enter through the north doors from 6:45 p.m. to 7:15 p.m.

Lastly, teens can join us Friday afternoon, Jan. 7, at 3:30 p.m. for January’s Casual Game Friday. Swing by for some fun and friendly matches of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Pick your fighter from a roster of 69 of some of the most iconic video game characters of all time, then duke it out on the battlefield with other teens to see who will be the ultimate champion!
