Barton Community College invites the public to celebrate the holidays with the following events:
Hilltop Singers to host Jingle Bell Swing Dance
The annual Jingle Bell Swing big-band dance will take place from 8–11 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 1, at the Great Bend American Legion, 1011 Kansas Ave. The evening will feature a live big band and the Hilltop Singers will also provide a special presentation during the evening.
Tickets can be purchased in advance by contacting Sara Oberle, Director of Choral Activities at oberles@bartonccc.edu or 620-792-9395, or at the door for $15 or $25 per couple. Proceeds from the event will help fund the Hilltop Singers recruiting tour in the spring.
Shafer Gallery Holiday Open House
The Shafer Gallery will feature the “Sterling Treasures 25th Anniversary Exhibition” and performances by the StoneLion Puppet Theater of Kansas City on Sunday, Dec. 3. StoneLion Puppet Theatre will present two 30-minute performances of “Twas the Night Before Christmas.” The first performance will be at 1:30 p.m., followed by a puppet-themed art-making workshop at 2 p.m. The second performance is at 3 p.m., also followed by a 30-minute puppet-making workshop at 3:45 p.m.
Holiday vocal and instrumental concert
The Barton Music Department will take its audience down memory lane and beyond as it hosts its Holiday Variety Show at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 4, in the Fine Arts Auditorium.
The concert will feature Christmas carols and popular seasonal music performed by Barton’s Concert Choir, Hilltop Singers, Da Capo, Dolce and Barton Jazz Band. Admission will be a freewill donation.
“Star of Bethlehem” planetarium show
The Barton Planetarium will host the annual “Star of Bethlehem” presentation on Sunday, Dec. 10, at 1, 2 and 3 p.m. The program presents one theory about the origin of the Star of Bethlehem and how it played into the story of the Christ Child.
The planetarium is in the college’s Science and Math Building on the north side of campus. Tim Folkerts, the college’s Planetarium Director, will host the presentations and will be available to answer questions. Reservations are not required and admission is free.
