HOLYROOD — Keeping in mind the spirit of giving during the holiday season, Central Plains Elementary School students in Holyrood were asked to bring their loose change to donate to the Kansas Food Bank to help fund the Food 4 Kids backpack program.
Area schools, including Central Plains, participate in the backpack program that provides pre-assembled bags of food to be distributed to qualifying children on Friday of each week. The cost for each food packet provided is $5.
Shae Sheehy, an instructor at the school, said students collected $397.06 in loose change. Paper money in various denominations, including a check from a local business, made the total $600.
"It’s a great way to involve our children, while teaching them the importance of giving," Sheehy said.
