Raymond K. Chapman, in Barton County District Court for a hearing Monday morning, suddenly fled Courtroom B after District Magistrate Judge Verle Willey announced his sentence, Barton County Sheriff Brian Bellendir said.

At about 9:47 a.m., Chapman, 41, of Hoisington was making an appearance in front of Willey at the Barton County Courthouse on a parole violation charge. “All went well until Judge Willey sentenced Chapman to 12 months in the county jail. Chapman bolted from the courtroom,” Bellendir said.

Chapman was shot with a Taser stun gun, but one of the leads failed make contact, he said. Chapman made it to the east door and fled from the courthouse.

Officers gave chase and Chapman was captured in the alley between Baker Avenue. and Holland Street, in the 1200 block.

Chapman was booked into jail for the 12-month probation violation sentence and now faces new charges of escape from custody, the sheriff said.

He was convicted of drug possession in Pawnee County in 2013, and was on post-release supervision.
