The Great Bend City Council will consider applying for a grant that will pay 80% of the estimated $800,000 cost for downtown sidewalk repairs. A resolution that would make that possible is on the agenda for the Great Bend City Council meeting, set for 6:30 p.m. Monday, May 6, at City Hall. Assistant City Engineer Hitha Kadiyala will report on the city’s application for a 2024 Transportation Alternative Grant from the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT). The city applied for the program for sidewalk repair and accessibility improvements for Main Street from 10th Street to 17th Street. KDOT has informed the city its match, if approved, will be 20%, or about $160,000. The city will also need to provide letters of support and pass a resolution acknowledging availability of the required local match. If the program is awarded, the city’s share will come from the quarter-cent sales tax fund.
