The form that collegiate sports will take this fall is still unknown but contracts for head coaches were approved at Tuesday’s Board of Trustees meeting at Barton Community College. Action on the contracts was on the agenda in May but postponed because of questions created by the COVID-19 pandemic. It is still not certain what the fall semester will look like.

Contracts for management staff and administrators were also on Tuesday’s agenda, along with public notification of a board vacancy following the death of trustee Mike Boys on June 4.

Board vacancy

Chairman Mike Johnson said it is time to start the process of filling the vacancy on the board. The steps approved Tuesday followed state statutes.

A legal notice will be published in the Great Bend Tribune and possibly in other Barton County newspapers, notifying the public that the vacancy will be filled by appointment. Any Barton County resident interested in completing Boys’ unexpired term, which ends Dec. 31, 2023, will contact the BCC President’s Office to receive information and an application. The deadline for submitting applications is July 20.

The board intends to make the appointment in August. Johnson said he hopes there will be some interest in people applying for the position.

Contracts approved; Howard retiring

The list of head coach contracts approved included one new position, for an eSports coach. Mike Rose will fill that position. There is still an opening for a head coach for men’s and women’s swimming. Barton President Dr. Carl Heilman said they may be close to filling that vacancy.

In the category of management contracts, it was noted that Jane Howard, executive director of Business, Technology and Community Education, is retiring. She said she has worked for the college for 32 years.

A new management contract was approved for Renae Skelton, as director of Nursing Education. There is still an opening for a director of the OSH (Occupational Safety and Health) Program and the Great Plains OSHA Education Center.
