The Community Support Services staff gathers in front of their new location, 5501 10th.

When the staff at Community Support Services (CSS) plans to meet with clients, they no longer have to scurry around to find empty office space.

This is because CSS is settling in to its new, more spacious offices at 5501 10th, the location of a former radio station at 10th and Macarthur.

CSS is a department of The Center for Counseling & Consultation; the main office is at 5815 Broadway, where CSS was housed in the basement.

The 14-member staff will soon grow to 16.

“We were simply running out of room at the Broadway location,” said Shionta Gray, CSS director. “Our services are growing and the other providers at The Center needed more space at the main building too.

“This move to 10th Street solved our space problems. Now we all have more space to accommodate our clients in a more comfortable and welcoming atmosphere.”

The pre-move work involved a coat of paint and updated wiring for The Center’s computer system. A new security system is being installed and outdoor signage will come later.

“CSS provides an array of services that are medically necessary,” Gray noted. “They support recovery and reduce institutionalization in instances of severe and persistent mental illness, or the need for psychiatric rehabilitation.”

The list of services includes:

• Community Psychiatric Support & Treatment is goal-directed, face-to-face intervention.

• Attendant Care helps clients understand doctors’ instructions and treatment plans.

• Psycho-Social Rehab helps develop skills to restore effective functioning in social environments.

• SOAR stands for SSI/SSDI Outreach, Access and Recovery.

• Targeted Case Management enhances independent functioning.

• Certified Peer Support promotes empowerment and self-advocacy in the recovery process with the help of a certified peer specialist who has first-hand experience with mental illness.

• Supportive housing and employment services are offered when needed.

“Anyone who believes they may benefit from any of these programs is encouraged to contact The Center,” Gray commented. “They can visit with a therapist who will refer them to CSS services when appropriate.”
