Area firefighting crews worked three hours to extinguish a blaze at the Barton County Landfill that started around 7:20 p.m. Friday. It is not known at this time what caused the blaze, said County Administrator and Solid Waste  Director Phil Hathcock.

 “Every once in a while we have these fires that come up in the landfill,” he said. Hathcock added that no structures were damaged. Crews from the Great Bend, Ellinwood, Claflin and Hoisington fire departments were involved in extinguishing the fire.
