The Great Bend City Council won’t meet again this month. City Administrator Logan Burns said that due to councilmembers’ schedules, there would not be a quorum for the March 16 meeting. The next meeting will be at 5:30 p.m. on April 6.
This and other topics were part of his report on city activities, presented at the March 2 meeting.
Public Lands crews are working at the Vets Park playground equipment on the south side of the park this week. “We had a complaint on the bridge structure, so we will have that equipment shut down this week to get that repaired.”
He noted that the council had just approved a consent agenda that included closing Lakin Avenue between Main and Williams Street for Rocky Mountain Race Week on June 5. Cars will be lining up on Lakin, south of the courthouse, for the public to view.
At the SCRA Dragstrip, concrete contractor Emory Sapp was pouring lane seven on the chase road on Monday, and they planned to pour lane two of the race lane on Tuesday, and lane five, which is the north outside lane, on Wednesday or Thursday, depending on the weather. With work scheduled this week and next week, Burns said, “we’re hoping to wrap that paving portion up on the dragstrip (pending weather) and they’ll we’ll move onto crash holes after that. Then on the tower, the exterior walls have been framed and the roof will be installed either (Tuesday) or Wednesday.
“And then, some other exciting news, NHRA has announced that Great Bend and the SRCA dragstrip will be one of 12 venues hosting the ET finals on Sept. 24-26. We’ll be able to have an exciting lineup of races this season.”
When asked if the dragstrip project is still on schedule, Burns said it is. “I think it’s in good shape if we can get the pours wrapped up in the next two weeks.”
