ELLINWOOD — The driver of a Chevy Silverado that crashed into the Ellinwood Fire Department’s south building around 11:48 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 6, was later transported to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita by air ambulance, according to a news release from the Ellinwood Police Department.

Members of the Ellinwood Police Department, Ellinwood Fire/EMS and Barton County Sheriff's Office responded to the 200 block of West Santa Fe Blvd. in reference to an injury accident. Upon arrival, officers located the 2005 Silverado 2500 embedded into the east wall of the EFD’s south building. The vehicle was on fire, and the driver, later identified as Dustin Lee Jahay, was trapped inside.

Responders were able to extinguish the fire and extricated Jahay from the vehicle. The building and numerous vehicles within the fire department were damaged in this incident.

The preliminary investigation indicated the vehicle was westbound in the 100 block of West Santa Fe when it left the roadway for an unknown reason. The vehicle continued traveling west until it struck the east wall of the building.

No further information will be released at this time, as this incident is still under investigation. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the Ellinwood Police Department, 620-564-3001.

No information on Jahay's condition was available, but a spokesman at Wesley said Thursday afternoon that he had been released from the hospital.
