All students enrolled in Unified School District 428 drivers education must meet at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 1., in the Great Bend High School auditorium. At this time, driving instructors will assign driving times and driving partners. This will take approximately one hour to an hour and a half.
Some students will begin driving immediately following the meeting. If students are not scheduled to drive that day, they may leave after receiving their schedule. Driving time is in addition to Classroom times.
Classroom sessions begin Thursday, June 2. Class periods are 7:30 -9:30 a.m., and 9:30-11:30 a.m., Monday through Friday, through June 23.
Class times are posted in the Great Bend Middle School office and the GBHS activities office. Parents are urged to have their students check their class times. Students are required to bring a pencil and paper to all class periods.
On Thursday, June 23, the last day of class, certificates of completion will be handed out to all students who have passed all tests with an 80 percent or above. Students who have not taken or passed all of the tests will have the opportunity to make up tests on that day and Friday June 24.
However, according to the activities office, this summer’s drivers ed sessions are already full. There are 160 students who will be taught by three instructors. Students had to be 14 by June 1 to participate.
A state law passed in 2010 requires all students to successfully complete drivers education before they can receive their restricted licence.
