Great Bend High School Class of 1971 announced its memorial scholarship for the 2013 graduating class. It will honor classmate Lynda Garrett.
Garrett graduated from GBHS in 1971 and resided in Great Bend. She passed away Feb. 8, 2013, in Great Bend after a courageous battle with cancer. Garrett was well known in this area and will be greatly missed, said JP Posththwaite, class spokesman.
“Each year we select a deceased classmate to honor for our memorial scholarship,” Postlethwaite said. “This will be the 11th classmate we have selected to honor since we started this Scholarship in 2003. Other classmates honored in this scholarship include James Lester Bilyew (2003), Mark Allen Link (2004), Beth (Haneke) McKinney (2005), Stanley Emmit Carroll (2006), Charles Jacob Robinson (2007), Donald Kim Kirkman (2008), Robert Lee Allison Jr. (2009), Ray Alan Cheely (2010), Mona Lynn (Youtsey) Durden (2011), and Jane Marie (Dringman) Koelch (2012).
“This memorial scholarship is part of a great tradition and is important to the legacy of GBHS,” Postlethwaite continued. “It is offered to a descendant of a GBHS Class of 1971 graduate and is for $1,000. This includes a son, daughter, nephew, niece, cousin, grandchild or great-grandchild. We hope to continue this tradition for many years to help support our own descendants and honor many of the great students who graduated from out great class.”
The Class of 1971 challenges other GBHS classes to start a similar scholarship series to continue education for GBHS students.
The Class of 1971 Memorial Scholarship is funded by donations. Anyone who wishes to support this cause can mail checks to P.O. Box 972, Great Bend, KS 67530 or contact Postlethwaite by e-mail at jpost21@cox.net.
