College life isnt easy. Between full class schedules, maintaining friendships and studying for finals, todays American students arent strangers to feelings of anxiety or depression.
In fact, depression and anxiety are currently at an all-time high on college campuses, according to a new survey from the University of California. Students self-rated emotional health dropped to 50.7 percent, a new record low and 2.3 percent lower than in 2013.
Similarly, nearly 10 percent of students admitted to frequently feeling depressed, a sharp increase from the mere 3.4 percent of students who were depressed in 2009.
According to Keith Magnus, the director of counseling at Butler University, the rising depression and anxiety rate is a cause for alarm.
The depression, and you worry about suicide, and getting very severe, he said in an interview with wishtv.com. Anxiety disorders, though, can also be pretty severe and debilitating as far as trying to learn and do what you need to do on a campus.
