Kans for Kids scholarship recipients announced

Kans for Kids Fighting Cancer Foundation has announced its 2014 scholarship recipients.
Any student who has received assistance from Kans for Kids during his or her battle with childhood cancer is eligible to receive two scholarships. Both scholarships are renewable for four years of higher education.
Former Great Bend resident Johnny Raat, Plainville, will receive both the Becky Nicholson/Kans for Kids Scholarship and the Jan Aylward Memorial Scholarship. He will attend Brigham Young University, Idaho, for the 2014-15 academic year as a junior, majoring in Math Education.
Johnny battled optic glioma, tumors of the optic nerves, that caused blindness when he was 2 years old and again when he was 6. His cancer is currently stable. He is the son of John and Crystal Raat, Plainville.
Katie Schwartz, Omaha, Neb., will receive both the Becky Nicholson/Kans for Kids Scholarship as well as the Jan Aylward Memorial Scholarship. She will be a junior at the University of Nebraska, Omaha, for the 2014-15 academic year. She is majoring in Elementary Education with an endorsement in Deaf and Hard of Hearing.
Katie was the inspiration behind the formation of Kans for Kids in 1994 when she battled cancer at the age of 9 months. She is currently cancer free and the daughter of Matt and Karen (Keith) Schwartz, Omaha.
Bryce Steiner, Claflin, will also receive both the Becky Nicholson/Kans for Kids Scholarship and the Jan Aylward Memorial Scholarship. He will be a sophomore at Ottawa University for the 2014-2015 academic year, majoring in Physical Education. He is the son of Chirs and Tammie Steiner.
Bryce was diagnosed with B-cell Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma during his senior year of high school. He is currently in remission.
