Eighteen students from Great Bend High school participated in the 35th annual Fort Hays State University Math Relays. The Relays were held on Nov. 14 on the FHSU campus. In attendance were 674 students, representing fifty-one area schools. The Great Bend squad placed sixth overall in the 4A – 6A category. The Panthers were represented by freshmen Cal Marshal and Dawson Clark; sophomores Olivia Blackwell, Kaylan Lagerman, Heather Schneider, Earving Morales, and Rane Libeer; juniors Natasha Bieker, Alex Morgan, Carter Sheffield, and Francesco Ruggeri; and seniors Greg Burley, Colton Lagerman, Trey Newkirk, Alec Witt, Logan Zecha, Jun Rei Chen, and Aaron Goerl.
Individual honors were given to several Panther team members. Students participated in several of six events held throughout the day. Some participated in these events as individuals, while others participated as a team. A first place finish went to the 11th grade team of Bieker, Morgan, and Sheffield in the event Algebraic Manipulations. The 12th grade team of Newkirk, Witt, and Zecha also finished 5th in this category. Third place honors went to seniors Lagerman, Newkirk, and Chen in the event Using Number Sense, along with a 5th place individual finish by senior Logan Zecha. Included in the 3rd place honors was the 10th grade team of Lagerman, Morales, and Libeer in the event Applications of Algebra. The senior team of Burley, Lagerman, and Goerl also placed 5th in this category.
Other top ten finishes included freshman Carter Sheffield in Trigonometry and Colton Lagerman, senior, in Informal Geometry and Measurement. Team finishes in the top ten also included the 11th grade team of Bieker, Morgan, and Sheffield with a 6th place finish in the Informal Geometry and Measurement event, as well as two 4th place finishes in the Calculations with Calculators event--these 4th place finishers included the sophomore team of Blackwell, Morales, and Libeer, and the senior team of Burley, Lagerman, and Zecha.
