Here is a brief look at what the Ellinwood City Council did Tuesday evening:

• Following a public hearing with no comments from the audience, approved an ordinance vacating streets and an alley in the Walnut Park Addition No. 1.

• Heard the 2022 city audit report as presented by Danielle Hollingshead, Adams Brown LLC. No infractions were observed.

• Presented a service award to city electric department employee Jon Perron for 15 years of service.

• Approved a request from lead pool Manager Tammy Sturn to have a mural painted on the front outside wall of the poolhouse. The mural, to be painted by artists Lisa McMullen and Hillary King, will be placed on the east wall, or front, of the poolhouse with a tropical sunset theme.

• Approved two mayoral appointments, Megan Anderson and Debbie Long, to the Ellinwood School/Community Library Board.

• Approved a draft agreement between the city and the Kansas Housing Resource Corporation regarding a Middle Income Housing grant. The agreement concerns the construction of: Eight rental units in the form of two duplexes with two bedrooms and two baths; one duplex with three bedrooms and two baths; and a fourplex with two units of one bedroom and one bath, and two units of two bedrooms and one bath. Construction to commence July 1.

• Approved repairs including engine replacement to the 2018 Dodge pickup utilized by the Ellinwood Police Department at a cost of $11,223.65.

• Approved the purchase of a used police vehicle at a cost of $22,000 from the Great Bend Police Department formerly utilized by the Kansas Highway Patrol. Mileage on the vehicle is 58,791 miles.

• Purchased at cost of $16,652 three pad-mount electrical transformers to be utilized in future projects.

• Heard a presentation by Electric Superintendent Jon Perron updating the council on the installation of automated metering infrastructure on the city’s electric system.

• Re-elected Councilman Ken Lebbin as president of the council to preside at council meetings in event of the mayor’s absence.

• Designated the city’s official depositories for city funds as Sunflower Bank N.A. and Peoples Bank & Trust.

• Designated the Ellinwood Leader as official newspaper for publication of city notices, with The Great Bend Tribune designated as alternate.

• Approved mayoral reappointments of Kirk Clawson and Steve Oelke to the city’s fire committee.

• Approve mayoral appointments for city officers/directors as the same as last year.

• Recessed into executive session for the discussion of non-elected personnel, followed by departmental director appointments which were the same as last year.

• Recessed into executive session for the discussion of acquisition of property, with no action taken.

• In regard to last month’s date selection of Independence Day Fireworks in Ellinwood, reset the date for the celebration as Sunday, July 2.

ELLINWOOD — Following a hearing in which no public comments were received, the Ellinwood City Council passed an ordinance vacating all or part of several streets and alleys in the Walnut Park Addition No. 1 at Tuesday’s meeting.

The following streets and alley in an undeveloped area in the northeast corner of Ellinwood are affected, according to the ordinance:

• All of Craig Street from the east right-of-way line of Park Avenue to the west right-of-way line of Fritz Street.

• All of Fritz Street from the north end of the recorded plat south to the extension of the center line of Pohlman Street.

• All of the north one-half of Pohlman Street from the east right-of-way line of Park Avenue east to the west right-of-way line of Fritz Street on the north side of Pohlman Street.

• All of the south one-half of Pohlman Street from the east right-of-way line of Park Avenue east to the west right-of-way line of Fritz Street.

• All of the 20-foot alley lying between Lots 1-5 and Lots 6-10 from the east right-of-way line of Park Avenue east to the west right-of-way line of Fritz Street on the south side of Pohlman Street.

The ordinance also stipulates that a utility easements will be reserved by the city on the west side of the current Fritz Street running north and south. 

Ownership of the vacated streets and alley will revert to the adjacent property owners pursuant to state statute.
