Fatal collision reported west of Great Bend

A Burdett man died in a two-vehicle collision Monday morning west of Great Bend, Barton County Sheriff Brian Bellendir reports.
Brett E. Hamby, 38, was pronounced deceased at the scene by County Coroner Dr. E.L. Jones.
Deputies were dispatched to the accident on U.S. 56, just west of town, at 10:50 a.m.
The preliminary investigation shows Hamby was driving a westbound 2009 Chevrolet Tahoe and crossed left of center into the eastbound lane, striking a 2001 Kenworth truck tractor pulling a box trailer. The driver of the truck, Larry D. Lienemann, 57, of Doniphan, Nebraska, was not injured.
The Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by Great Bend Fire and EMS units, the coroner and the Kansas Department of Transportation.
U.S. 56 was closed for nearly 3 hours for investigation and cleanup operations. The case is still under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office.
