This weekend there will be a free diaper giveaway and free loads of laundry at two separate events in Great Bend.

Diapers and wipes

Free diapers and wipes will be given away from 9:30-11:30 a.m. at the First Southern Baptist Church Annex (south building), 3301 19th St. Families can receive one parcel per child. To reserve your size and ensure that it is available, contact the church by telephone at 620-793-8444.

Pastor Tim Singleton said his church members thought this would be a good way to meet a community need – and to meet people in the community.

“Jesus has been generous to us and we want to be generous in our community and connect to our community,” he said. This event allows them to meet people face to face for conversations and prayer, if desired, he said.

Laundry Love

United Way of Central Kansas is bringing the quarters for the machines at Discount Laundry, 924 Jefferson St., from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday. Soap, softener and drier sheets will also be provided, said Charell Owings, executive director of  UWCK. Participants can wash and dry up to five loads of laundry per family. They’ll even have some coloring books so children will have something to do.

Future Laundry Love events will be on the third Saturday of the month, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Discount Laundry at 924 Jefferson.

Moeder Plumbing, Heating & Air is also a sponsor of this first event. United Way needs volunteers and sponsors for future Laundry Love events, Owings said. They need about four volunteers and  about $400 in donations for each event.

“It’s for anyone that needs to do their laundry,” said Barton County Community Health Worker Flor Sanchez. “We  hope to help around 30 families Saturday.”
