By now, most young readers know the story of “Charlotte’s Web,” the classic book by E.B. White. Great Bend USD 428 launched its 2022 Great Bend Reading Initiative on Jan. 4, making sure every family with children in grades K-6 had a copy of the book and a schedule for reading “Charlotte’s Web” and participating in related community and school activities. Each student received a GB Reads kit containing a book, calendar of events, Community Scavenger Hunt, and their first PIG Board.
The goal of the GB Reading Initiative is to encourage families to read together.
Families were encouraged to read together at home and post pictures on social media with the hashtag #GBReads.
PIG boards are similar to BINGO cards, with questions and activities for each week. When students return a completed PIG board to their school library, they receive a small prize and a chance to vote for a teacher or staff member at their school to kiss a pig on Valentine’s Day.
Next week, Great Bend High School theater students will present a “Charlotte’s Web” play at each of the district’s five elementary schools and the citywide scavenger hunt will wrap up with winners drawn at each building on Thursday.
