The Great Bend High School forensics team competed in the first tournament weekend of the season at the Augusta Speech tournament on Saturday.
The team had eight students compete in 15 events. Seven events placed.
In oration three GBHS students qualified to the top six in finals. Freshman Michael Gieck placed fifth, sophomore Sylvia Ofoma placed third, and freshman Mary Beuoy placed second, qualifying her for the state championship tournament.
"It challenged my public speaking skill," said Beuoy.
Junior Alexa Bright placed fifth in Informative and sixth in Prose. "It’s a lot different being in a 5A tournament than a 1A tournament," said Bright, "I wasn’t as prepared as I would have liked, but it was a great time with everyone who went to the tournament."
In duo acting, Taylor Lea and Ofoma made it to finals and placed seventh.
"I was very impressed and proud of all of my students who pushed themselves to get ready for the very first tournament of the season," said GBHS forensics coach Barbra Watson. " I thought everyone did a great job."
