Great Bend Middle School students rehearse at an in-house music festival in February.

Great Bend Middle School’s 7th- and 8th-grade bands recently held an in-house music festival.

Each band played two selections. The 7th-grade band played “Summit Fanfare” by William Owens and “The Thunderer” by John Philip Sousa, arranged by Michael Story. The 8th-grade band played “Newcastle March” by Johnnie Vinson and “Storybrook Mountain” by Robert Sheldon.

Festival clinician was Randy Crow, a retired master teacher from the Maize school district. He has won awards for Outstanding Music Educator, Kansas Teacher of the Year and Outstanding Bandmaster. He also founded the “Get Trombonafide” clinic in the Wichita area.

Mr. Crow worked with each of the bands giving them praise for things they did well and working with them on places in the music where he could help them improve. GBMS Band Director Don Regehr said the 8th-grade band will perform March 2 at the St. John Band Festival.

“I thought the clinics went well and thank the students for being attentive and trying the things Mr. Crow asked them to do,” Regehr said.
