The Great Bend Middle School seventh and eighth grade volleyball teams are competitive on and off the court.
Coach Nicholl Weigel helped organize the teens in a community-service project recently when there were no matches scheduled. The teams were encouraged to donate non-perishable food items to the Barton County Food Bank.
Weigel played to the competitive nature of the girls and turned it into a friendly competition to see which team could donate the most items. The eighth-grade team won.
“The girls had a lot of fun doing this community-service project,” Weigel said. “I think making it a competition raised the level of expectations.
“I was definitely shocked when the girls were bringing the items down to the gym in wagons,” Weigel said, adding, “They should be really proud of themselves because they helped a lot of families.”
