GBRC announces summer programs

The Great Bend Recreation Commission’s summer programs are set to begin the first of June and run through July. GBRC is asking parents to register their kids for programs as soon as possible.  

The Rec will offer summer activities at the Great Bend Recreation Center, 1214 Stone St.; The Great Bend Activity Center, 2715 18th St.; as well as Lincoln, Jefferson, Eisenhower and Park elementary schools, Veterans Park, Brit Spaugh Zoo, the Kansas Wetlands Education Center and other locations throughout Great Bend.

Activity Center/Enrichment Director Garet Fitzpatrick indicated several enrichment and recreation programs are still available for children between the ages of 5 and 16.

These programs include Children’s Theatre “Happily Ever Before,” abstract doodling, painting, general arts and crafts, cartooning, tennis lessons, golf lessons, cheer-leading, Fourth of July crafts, science, games, tie dye, cooking classes, swimming lessons and outdoor experience activities.

The Rec will also offer several one-time classes, including Baby-sitting 101, Buzz The Bee, Goofy Giraffe, I Love Ice Cream, Collage Masterpiece, I Love My Dog, Surfboard Dude, Summer Wreath, Pool Time Flamingo, Father’s Day Surprise, My Own Robot, Grab Bag Creations, Take A Smile To Someone, Circles The Caterpillar, and I Love Flip Flops.

Fitzpatrick said GBRC will also offer several camps and Kids Day Out programs this summer. Some of the options include Touring The Cheyenne Bottoms, Fort Larned National Historic Site, Pirate Treasure Hunt, Fishing Fun Day, 4th Of July, Kids Day At The Beach, C.S.I. & Kids Safety Day Out, Challenger Soccer Camp and Exploring The Great Bend Brit Spaugh Zoo Camp.

The Rec will also offer preschool programs for children ages 3 to 4 at various locations in Great Bend.  These programs include Preschool Aquatics, Crayola Kids, Amazing Shapes Made Fun, Jr. All-Stars, Movin & Groovin With Music, I’m A Doodle Bug, Cheer-leading, Get Messy, PreSchool Zoo and cooking classes.  One-time preschool classes include Tractor Time, Dino Time, My Rocket Ship and My Big Truck.  

The Rec will also offer family classes, which will be for children ages 4 to 10 accompanied by an adult. Family classes will take place in the evenings and on Saturday mornings. Fitzpatrick said these classes provides families an opportunity to spend quality time together.

GBRC also offers adult classes for ages 16 and older including Water Aerobics, Yoga, Tai Chi, Zumba, Get A.M. Strong, Cardio Mix Up, Noon Body Shaping, Get Fit Outdoors, 50+ Crafts, painting, arts and crafts.
