Barton Community College’s Center for Adult Education will soon be starting its 9-week GED Preparation Class.
The orientation session, which is a prerequisite for the course, will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Aug. 4-8 at 1025 Main St. in Great Bend. Those interested can call ahead or arrive on the first day of orientation.
Regular coursework begins on Aug. 11 and is offered from 9 a.m. to noon Monday, Tuesday and Thursday or in the evenings from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.
Barton’s Coordinator of Adult Education Chris Lemon said he hopes students will view their General Educational Development diploma as an open doorway to greater opportunities in post-secondary education. Barton has taken steps to incentivize this type of long-term thinking among its GED students with some significant scholarship opportunities.
There is a one-time $50 fee for materials.  Once students have completed the preparation courses, they will be able to take the official GED test. The cost to take the test is $120.
Individuals may take the GED exam without any preparation instruction, but are urged to receive advising before moving forward, Lemon said.
Students must bring a valid ID. Minors must bring a parent or legal guardian to enroll and must also bring their disclaimer or exemption documentation from their high school or online program.
