Great Bend plans citywide mosquito spraying

The City of Great Bend has released the dates for the city-wide mosquito spraying during the upcoming weeks. These dates are tonight, and June 18, 25, 29, and 30 as well as July 1 and 2. The spraying will take place from 8 p.m. To midnight on each of the scheduled dates.

“We spray at these times because it is when the mosquitoes are most active and the chemical will kill the one’s it comes into contact with,” said Mike Crawford, public works superintendent. Once the chemical is sprayed it dissipates quickly, therefore there is no residue.

Weather conditions can become an important factor when determining if the spraying will take place as scheduled. If heavy rain were to occur, the city will postpone spraying, Crawford said.

If a light rain occurs, the city will continue to spray as planned.

“We see more outdoor activity on Friday’s than we do on Thursday,” said Crawford, “that is why we choose to spray on Thursdays.” The City of Great Bend hopes to avoid interfering with families who are enjoying the outdoors during the summer months.
