Great Bend USD 428 celebrates school board leaders

January is School Board Recognition Month, and Great Bend USD 428 would like to thank these community leaders who volunteer countless hours to shape the future of our public schools.

“Our board of education is comprised of seven individuals whose decisions impact the future of every child in our school and our greater school community,” said Khris Thexton, superintendent. “They participate in training, read reports and research and attend specialized professional development to stay on top of education issues and trends, all in preparation for the many decisions they are called upon to make. And they do this all on a volunteer basis!”

School board members in USD 428 develop policies and make tough decisions that help shape the future of our education system, Thexton said. They bear responsibility and oversight for an annual budget of $60 million, 2,800 students, over 700 employees, and 11 buildings.

“They are advocates for our community, our children and our public schools, and are committed to providing an excellent education for every child in our community. We are grateful to have this opportunity to formally say ‘thank you’ to each of them,” said Thexton.

School board members and their years of service are:

• Jacquie Disque, 2018-2022

• Deanna Essmiller, 2018-2022

• Lori Reneau, Vice President, 2015-2019

• Cheryl Rugan, 2011-2019 (second term)

• Chris Umphres, President, 2015-2019

• Don Williams, 2018-2022

• Susan Young, 2015-2019

USD 428 encourages the entire community to thank a school board member for their service, not only this month but throughout the entire year.
