Don Halbower receives Veteran Salute
Donates scholarship to Hirsh

Donald Halbower, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran who was Great Bend High  School’s principal for many years, has been chosen for KSN’s Veteran Salute. This is a weekly feature of the Wichita television station where veterans tell their stories. Halbower’s interview is scheduled to run on Tuesday, May 30.

Along with this honor, Wichita attorneys DeVaughn James give $500 to each veteran selected for the Veteran Salute.

Friday night, Don and his wife Pat Halbower were at the American Legion Post 180 in Great Bend, for the monthly Quilts of Valor awards. After the quilt awards, Halbower presented the $500 from DeVaughn James as a scholarship to Gavin Hirsh, the valedictorian of the Great Bend High School Class of 2023.

Hirsh plans to attend the University of Kansas next year. He is the grandson of Richard and Carol Bieber, who were also there for the presentation.
