There are many new books at Hoisington Library.
Here are a few:
“Long Range.” C.J. Box. When Joe Pickett is asked to join the rescue efforts for the victim of a startling grizzly attack, he reluctantly leaves his district behind. One survivor of the grizzly’s rampage tells a bizarre story, but just as Joe begins to suspect the attack is not what it seems, he is brought home by an emergency on his own turf.
Someone has targeted a prominent local judge, shooting at him from a seemingly impossible distance. While the judge was not hit, his wife is severely wounded, and it is up to Joe to find answers--and the shooter.
“Lavender Blue Murder.” Laura Childs. Tea maven Theodosia Browning and her tea sommelier Drayton Conneley are guests at an English bird hunt. But one shot sounds too close, and when Theodosia wanders into the neighbor’s lavender field, she discovers their host, Reginald Doyle, bleeding to death.
His grieving wife, Meredith, begs Theodosia and Drayton to stay the night. But after Theodosia awakens to find the house on fire, she begins an investigation that includes finger-pointing, a missing person, and a bid to find answers via a séance. And all the while Theodosia worries if she’s made a mistake in inviting a prime suspect to her upscale Lavender Lady Tea.
“The Crow’s Call.” Wanda Brunstetter. When Vernon King, his son, and son-in-law are involved in a terrible accident, three women are left to cope with their deaths, as they become the sole providers of the family they have left. The women’s only income must come from the family greenhouse, but someone seems to be trying to force them out of business. Amy King has just lost her father and brother, and her mother needs her to help run the family’s greenhouse.
It doesn’t seem fair to ask her to leave a job she loves, when there is still a sister and brother to help. But Sylvia is also grieving for her husband while left to raise three children, and Henry, just out of school, is saddled with all the jobs his father and older brother used to do. As Amy assumes her new role, she also asks Jared Riehl to put their courtship on hold.
“Sisters by Choice.” Susan Mallery. After her cat toy empire goes up in flames, Sophie Lane returns to Blackberry Island, determined to rebuild. Until small-town life reveals a big problem: she can’t grow unless she learns to let go. If Sophie relaxes her grip even a little, she might lose everything. Or she might finally be free to reach for the happiness and love that have eluded her for so long. Kristine has become defined by her relationship to others. She’s a wife, a mom. As much as she adores her husband and sons, she wants something for herself--a sweet little bakery just off the waterfront. She knew changing the rules wouldn’t be easy, but she never imagined she might have to choose between her marriage and her dreams. Like the mainland on the horizon, Heather’s goals seem beyond her grasp. Every time she manages to save for college, her mother has another crisis. Can she break free, or will she be trapped in this tiny life forever?
“The Warsaw Protocol.” Steve Berry. After former Justice Department agent Cotton Malone witnesses the theft of one of the seven precious relics of the Arma Christi, the weapons of Christ, he learns from his old boss, Stephanie Nelle, that a private auction is about to be held where incriminating information on the president of Poland will be offered to the highest bidder.
The price of admission is one of the relics, so Malone is first sent to a castle in Poland to steal the Holy Lance, and then on to the auction itself. But nothing goes as planned and Malone is thrust into a bloody battle between three nations over information that, if exposed, could change the balance of power in Europe.
