HOISINGTON — Hoisington’s annual Labor Day weekend celebration continued Saturday with citywide garage sales and a scavenger hunt for children.
Families could pick up the scavenger hunt list in the parking lot behind Emmanual Lutheran Church and everyone who completed the list received a goodie bag. Volunteers dressed as clowns were in charge of the operation and also provided snow cones while accepting freewill donations for the GPS Kids Club.
There were 26 items to look for around town but Debbie Stephens from GPS Kids Club said most participants were able to complete it. The hardest thing to find Saturday morning was a cat. One participant said she was surprised at just how many fire hydrants there are in town. Those were also on the list.
A Labor Day Bingo game for shoppers started last Thursday and the Hoisington Chamber of Commerce also sponsored a drive-through barbecue and a poker run on Saturday.
The city’s signature Labor Day weekend celebration was scaled down this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with no street dance or other crowd-generating activities. However, the Hoisington Chamber is still having its 124th Annual Labor Day Parade on Monday, albeit in a nontraditional format. This year the chamber is holding a “REVERSE Parade” from 10 a.m. to noon on Sept. 7. Instead of entries following the parade route down Main Street, residents, businesses and non-profits were invited to participate by decorating their yards with displays that people can drive past. Emergency management vehicles, and classic, antique or unique vehicles will also be showcased around town. There is no parade route but motorists are encouraged to drive each street and see what they find.
This year’s parade theme is 2020: Envisioning Our Future, but residents were given free rein and encouraged to “be creative.” There will be one winner selected in each of three categories, business, non-profits and individuals/families.
