The Great Bend Fire Department responded to a structure fire at 7:31 p.m. on Thursday at 723 1/2 Madison.
According to the Chief Mike Napolitano, upon arrival the first unit reported smoke coming from a single-family home. As crews entered the structure they located the fire in the attic.
Firefighters faced some challenges due to multiple additions having been built that created several attic spaces.
“This made access difficult but the fire was extinguished,” Napolitano said.
“The house is owned by Terry Stueder and sustained damage in excess of $5,000,” he said. No one was home at the time of the fire.
Wheatland Electric disconnected the power to the house. The preliminary investigation places the cause of the fire as electrical.
An investigator from the State Fire Marshal’s Office came out Friday morning to assist with the investigation.
Crews from the GBFD remained on scene for two hours and they were assisted by the Great Bend Police Department and the Kansas Highway Patrol.
