Most of 10th Street, the busy thoroughfare that cuts through the heart of Great Bend, will see major improvements in the coming year. The City Council Monday night accepted a bid from Venture Corporation for the nearly $1.5 million project, of which the city will have to cover 25%.
In October 2019, the city was awarded funding through the Kansas Department of Transportation Cost-share program for the mill and overlay of nearly all of 10th Street/U.S. 56 within the city limits, City Administrator Kendal Francis said. The project areas include the following stretches of 10th (from west to east): Patton Road to Kennedy; Kennedy to McKinley; two segments between McKinley and Harrison; Washington to Main; and Frey to Hickory.
“We recently solicited bids for the project,” Francis said. “We received one bid which was from Venture Corporation.”
The portion between Main and Washington will require substantially more full-depth patching to provide a proper base, he said. So, the city sought both base bids and an alternate to account for this additional work.
Francis said city staff has reviewed the bid and is recommending the base bid with the additional alternate, totaling $1,490,434.50.
Work will begin later this month or early in February, Francis said. There has been no pre-construction meeting, so he was unsure of the time line, but the work could take several months to complete.
Background
After the funds were awarded in October 2019, the city in February signed two cost-share agreements with KDOT for the work which totals over $3 million for two projects, of which KDOT is covering 75%. This included 10th Street as well as the rebuilding of the Sunflower Rod and Custom Association dragstrip.
The total construction cost that KDOT is reimbursing for the dragstrip is $1,590,867 and reimbursement for the street is $1,461,028, totalling roughly $2.24 million. The city’s total share for both comes to $1.15 million, including engineering, design and inspection costs.
The full-depth replacement of the entire SRCA dragstrip is about 25% complete. The work is being done by Suchy Construction of Great Bend.
