Take part in a butterfly count and learn how to identify our local butterfly species at the Cheyenne Bottoms 2nd Annual Butterfly Quest, beginning at 8:30 a.m. on July 16 at the Kansas Wetlands Education Center.
Participants will review butterfly species found in our area, then leave to stalk the elusive creatures for an official North American Butterfly Association Count. The NABA County is in its 37th year and gathers information to track population trends. Organized like the Christmas Bird Count, much of the count is done from a vehicle and maps and data sheets are provided. Those who want to continue after a lunch break, will go back out until 4 p.m. There is a fee of $3 for the count, due the day of the event. Please preregister by July 14. The maximum limit is 30 people. Please call KWEC at 1-877-243-9268 to reserve a spot or for more information.
