TOPEKA – Tuesday, Governor Laura Kelly announced the appointment of Andrea Cross, Russell, to fill the unexpired term of retiring District Magistrate Judge Marty Clark.

“Andrea has deep roots in Russell County and knows the issues facing the citizens of Russell County and the 20th Judicial District,” Governor Laura Kelly said. “I know she will serve from the bench with integrity.”

Cross grew up in Russell and has been involved in numerous local organizations through professional and volunteer activities. She previously served as President of philanthropic educational organization P.E.O. Chapter HD, was a trustee for VFW Post 6240 Auxiliary, and is currently president of the Russell Library Board.

For the past two years, Cross has worked for Options Domestic & Sexual Violence Services, a domestic violence nonprofit. Before that, Cross worked in Russell County Unified School District 407. She is a 1990 graduate of Russell High School.

“Being appointed to the bench by Governor Kelly is a tremendous honor,” Cross said. “I have lived in Russell for most of my life and take very seriously the obligation to serve my community fairly and without bias. I have always looked for opportunities to serve my community and I am excited to serve in this new role.”

Magistrate judges in Russell County are elected and serve four-year terms. When a judge retires in the middle of a term, the governor appoints a new judge to finish out the term. The position to which Cross is being appointed will be on the ballot in 2022.
