Welcome Inn meets
LARNED — The regular monthly meeting of the Welcome Inn Leisure Center Inc. was called to order by President Charles Wonsetler on September 7, 2011 at 12:40 p.m. In addition to Charles Wonsetler, the following board members were present: Betty Tauscher, Secretary, Thelmarie Wilhite, Historian, Ernie Ashley, Financial Sec., Marylee Phinney, Vice President and Roger Haberman, Reporter. Absent was Jim Forrest, Treasurer.
Betty Tauscher gave the treasurer’s report. All bills were allowed.
September is National Senior Center month. There will be a weekly article in The Tiller and Toiler on activities here at the Welcome Inn, along with some quotes from individuals that eat at the Welcome Inn. Free coffee and tea will be available with the noon meals. Some other possible activities were also discussed.
The next carry-in dinner is scheduled for Sept. 11 with Bobbie Sharrock and Nan Williams being the hosts. The carry in dinners held on Aug. 14 was hosted by Mary Kerns and Loretta Moss with over 30 people attending, and a lot of food available.
The meeting adjourned at 1:30 p.m. The next meeting is scheduled at 12:45 p.m. Oct. 5. The annual meeting will take place Oct. 5 starting about noon.

Class to help Komen fund
LARNED — A self-defense seminar designed for women and children will benefit the Susan Komen Quest For A Cure Breast Cancer Fund. The class is scheduled from 1 to 5 p.m. Sept. 24.
Nathan Chlumsky, director of the Larned Family Israeli/Okinawan Kobra Kai Karate and Mixed Martial Arts USA Academy, will donate $5 for each person who signs up for the class.
The seminar “Fight like a Girl,” is for women, children and any and all who would like to train. The program was created by a female martial artist and is now associated with the fight to end breast cancer.
“It will consist of many street fighting concepts that are simple for anyone to do and will work on bigger attackers with little effort,” he said. “I hope that this will become an annual event which will grow bigger and better.”

Retirement ceremony
LARNED — A retirement reception for Larned State Hospital employee Leon Sanders is scheduled from 2 to 4 p.m. Friday at the Activity Conference Room at Larned State Hospital. Sanders is retiring after 25 years of service.
Plant, craft sale Friday
LARNED — Prairie Treasures, the horticulture workshop at the Larned State Hospital Greenhouse, has scheduled a plant sale from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday. Items included at this sale will be wreaths, crafts, decorations, foliage plants and gift items.
Correction
LARNED — The Guaranteed Maximum Price for the Pawnee Valley Community Hospital was incorrectly listed in Tuesday’s Great Bend Tribune. The price is a shade under $18.3 million. The Wichita Health Facilities Group is the architectural firm for PVCH. Murray Company of Overland Park is the construction firm.
