LARNED — The Larned VFW Auxiliary meeting was called to order by President Rita Kurtz on the second Monday of the month at 5:30 p.m. at the Post Home.
Secretary/Treasurer Karen Gilkey gave the minutes of the last meeting and presented the treasurer’s repot. Chaplain Tammy Maes lead the opening ceremony.
It was reported that we used approximately 2,300 poppies for Memorial Day weekend. A big thank you goes to the Episcopalian Youth for their help in putting poppies on the Veteran’s graves. A thank you also goes to Barbara Penka for her yearly work with poppy donations.
Gilkey reports that she attended State Convention in Hutchinson. Larned received several awards — first place certificate for Youth Activities, first place for Legislative Reporting, and certificates for Buddy Poppies, a Healthy Auxiliary and membership, and Honorable Mention for Media Utilization.
The District 7 VFW meeting is Aug. 21 at Ransom. The Auxiliary President and Post Commander will be honored.
Annual dues of $17 are now due. Reminder letters will be mailed.
A big thank-you was given to Brenda Perez for organizing the appreciation meal for local law enforcement, Kansas Highway Patrol, EMTs and firefighters. People in the community quickly helped her with this kind gesture.
Money was donated to the Paralyzed Veterans of American, to the VFW, and to the Wounded Warrior Project.
The next meeting is scheduled at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 12 at the Post Home.
