A Valentine’s Day tradition continued Monday when the Madrigal-Pops Singers from Great Bend High School delivered Singing Valentines throughout the community.
Vocal music director Susan Stambaugh said this is an annual fundraiser for the Madrigals. Choir members deliver a vocal performance and a rose to each lucky recipient.
“We began at 7:30 in the morning and at approximately every 10-minute interval we were singing for a different organization or individual,” Stambaugh said. They traveled to residences, the library, the cancer center, Barton Community College and local businesses throughout the day.
This gave the students a chance to interact with people from the community and to represent Great Bend High School as well as the music department, Stambaugh said.
“I was proud of their ability to keep with the schedule and continue to sing even the last song with the same amount of enthusiasm as the first song,” she said.
Throughout the day, students walked for miles in formal attire, including high-heeled shoes for the girls, Stambaugh said. “They all carried themselves so well; I was very proud!”
Next up for the vocal music department are clinicians coming in from various colleges, then contest and then the GBHS Variety Show on Mother’s Day weekend.
“Every year I say this, and every year it is the truth, I have wonderfully talented, dedicated students. They recently sang the national anthem for the homecoming game, and they sang throughout the year for different clubs and organizations. These students are involved in sports, they are the homecoming royalty, they are well respected by their teachers and peers, and Great Bend is very fortunate to have year after year kids and parents who are willing to keep the tradition alive.”
