The Great Bend Public Library has begun reorganizing the main library “stacks” (bookshelves) in order to make the library space more inviting and flexible. The way the Great Bend community uses our library has changed in the recent years, and we are updating the library’s layout to reflect those changes and new demands. Library programs continue to draw more and more people into the library, and we need to create a more open central area where we can host events. Use of the library’s meeting rooms has exceeded our expectations. Our community loves to use the library as a gathering place to meet with others, and this need will also be reflected in the new design.

The first phase of the reorganizing is already under way! The tall bookshelves in the adult area of the library will be shortened so that they are about four feet high. Please be patient with us as we work on these shelves, because there may be some noise and some books will need to be temporarily placed in a different location while the shelves are rebuilt. These lower shelves will make it easier to access books in the collection, and will open up the entire adult area. This will allow more natural light in from the library windows and make the area feel larger. In addition, we will begin working on moving some shelves to different areas to create larger, more comfortable sitting areas for patrons to enjoy. Stop by the library in the next few weeks to see how the space is changing to be more inviting, and we would be happy to show you new locations for some of our collections.

There is also an egg decorating contest at the library during the first few weeks of April: open to all ages! Take one or more eggs and decorate them on the theme of a book (book character, location, title, or other creative ideas). The library will supply white plastic eggs if you need them, but you may also use plastic, blown, or hard-boiled eggs of your own (no raw eggs). There is also a crafting supply and work station area available in the library if you need some decorating materials. Once you have finished decorating your masterpiece, bring in to the library between April 1 and April 19 for display. Judging will take place on April 22, and prizes will be awarded in six different age categories.

See the schedule below for the library’s activities during this upcoming week.
