HOISINGTON — LaShon Van Scyoc has taken over as the new owner of the downtown barbershop at 119 Main in Hoisington. Van Scyoc has lived all of life in Hoisington and is taking over from the former owner, Bob Vincent, who also happens to be his wife’s grandfather.
The new career is a change for him. "I’ve been a laborer my whole life," said Van Scyoc. He worked as a brick maker prior to attending cosmetology school in Hays, learning there how to cut hair. He commuted for one year to complete his education at Hays Academy of Hair Design, graduating in April of this year.
"I learned everybody’s hair is different," said the barber. "It’s something I really enjoy doing." He said that it is creative because each is different.
"There are so many ways to cut, you develop your own way," said Van Scyoc. Right now, he is only cutting men’s hair, but is considering offering manicures and pedicures.
Van Scyoc is enjoying the ownership because he can be his own boss.
He just opened the first week in May, and did 38 haircuts his first two days. Van Scyoc also changed the name from Vincent’s Barber Shop to The Fade.
Vincent owned the business for about 40 years, opening in Hoisington in 1971. He worked cutting hair in other communities prior to opening at the current location.
Vincent will help out on days when Van Scyoc is on vacation.
The hours of operation are from Tuesday-Friday 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Saturday from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. He takes walk-ins. The telephone number is 653-7737.
The Fade will host the Chamber of Commerce Coffee on June 9 with a ribbon cutting.
Van Scyoc is married to his wife April and they have three kids, Ki, Nora and Ella.
