BUSHTON — USD 112 Central Plains Middle School students spent a couple of hours last week performing plays of the six pillars of character.
Not only was the exercise to reinforce character traits, it also was a team building activity for the whole school.
Each student participated in one of twelve skits. The students were divided so that each group had students from grades 5-8.
The character traits were trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship.
The first skit opened with two boys not allowing others to cheat off of them. Another skit opened with the students finding a wallet, and returning it with the money intact.
Respect was defined. Respect is an attitude of consideration toward others. The students talked about how to show respect for everyone. Students were also encouraged to include people who were by themselves.
They showed examples of disrespect such as talking during class and pushing. They also spoke of respect for the flag, and when others try to help you improve.
"This is a way to get all of the students to interact," said Rhi Becker, asst. principal. "We have a very good population and already see these things."
She added that these exercises get the students out of their comfort zone and get different group to work together.
One group demonstrated irresponsibility when they acted like they forgot to feed River, the therapy dog. Fortunately, the scent of food vigorously roused the dog, saving him from an early death.
