TOPEKA — The Kansas Humanities Council announces six Kansas hosts for “Hometown Teams,” a Smithsonian Institution traveling exhibition about sports and community coming to Kansas in 2015. The Ellinwood School/Community Library will be first. The show there will run from Jan. 31 to March 15, 2015.
“Hometown Teams” explores the many ways that sports build and unite communities using photographs, hands-on components, and audio and video clips from the Smithsonian Institution. From the little leagues to the big leagues and everywhere in between, “Hometown Teams” examines how sports are a significant part of the national narrative.
Hosts for the 2015 Kansas Tour of “Hometown Teams” include:
• Goodland, High Plains Museum, Mar. 25 - May 3, 2015
• Greensburg, Kiowa County Historical Museum, May 9 - June 21, 2015
• Atchison, Atchison County Historical Society, June 27 - Aug. 9, 2015
• Perry, Perry Pride, Aug. 15 - Sept. 27, 2015
• Humboldt, Humboldt Historic Preservation Alliance, Oct. 3 - Nov. 15, 2015
The Kansas Humanities Council presents “Hometown Teams” in partnership with the Smithsonian Institution’s Museum on Main Street program. “Through Museum on Main Street, the Kansas Humanities Council is able to bring the resources of the nation’s premier cultural institution to museums, historical societies, and public libraries in Kansas’ small towns and rural communities,” said Julie Mulvihill, executive director of the Kansas Humanities Council. “Our six ‘Hometown Teams’ hosts were selected because of their innovative plans to use the Smithsonian exhibition as a springboard to explore, preserve, and share stories of how sports have shaped their own communities over time and across generations.”
The Kansas Humanities Council is a nonprofit organization that supports community-based cultural programs, serves as a financial resource through an active grant-making program, and encourages Kansans to engage in the civic and cultural life of their communities.
