Ellinwood debaters compete

ELLINWOOD —Ellinwood High School debaters fared well in two meets held on Saturday. Sophomores Connor Birzer and Jenna Snell won Sterling High School’s junior-varsity tournament, placing first out of more than 30 pairs from 11 different schools. Hannah Maddy and Megan Orndoff also represented Ellinwood at the Sterling meet.

At the Lions Roar Invitational hosted by Lyons High School, varsity team members Montara Johansen and Carli Newkirk placed 6th in the open division with a 4 win-1 loss record. In the novice division, freshmen Hannah Billinger and Jenna Collins also went 4-1, earning medals for 4th place. Novices Dessie Clark and Brent Garren also competed, and the squad’s combined win-loss record earned them a sweepstakes trophy for 3rd place out of 20 schools competing.

The team is coached by Julie Ann Jacobs and assisted by Angela Peterson.
