HOISINGTON —The Hoisington debate team placed recently at Lyons.
In the sweepstakes competition (best record from 3 two-person teams), the Cardinals tied for third with Nickerson out of 17 schools. The Cardinals ended in fourth because Nickerson had 67 speaker points and  Hoisington had 70 (low score is better).  Salina-South and McPherson placed first and second, respectively, with 11-4 records.  The Hoisington novice (first year) team of Emma Harmon and Sydney Boxberger went 4-1 and placed fifth out of 23 novice teams. They defeated a Haven team, a Newton team, and two Nickerson teams.  They lost to a team from Salina-South.
The Hoisington open (varsity) team of Shannon Manka and Brandy Bodine went 4-1 and placed sixth out of 30 open teams. They defeated teams from Pratt, Halstead, McPherson and Dodge City.  They lost to a Salina-South team.
Robbie Willesden and Jadyn Spears went 2-3 in the open division.  Corbin Crawford and Logan McHenry went 2-3 in the novice division.  Emma, Sydney, Jadyn, Corbin, and Logan were all debating for the very first time.
Joey Lewis and Kenzie Wolf are also part of the Cardinal debate team, coached by Marion Oborny.
Last weekend, the team hosted a tournament for 11 schools.  Salina-South won that tournament, followed by Sterling in second and Colby in third.
Action continues this week for the team with a workshop at Fort Hays State University, League Debate at Sterling College, and an invitational tournament at Hays.
