CLAFLIN — For school board appreciation month, Superintendent Steve Woolf thanked the board for their time and effort, and a job well done at their recent meeting.
The board approved the purchase of infant simulators for the Family and Consumer Science class. Teacher Susan Patterson gave a presentation on the problem on teen pregnancy and the resulting poverty levels, child abuse, and medical challenges.
In her presentation, she reported three in 10 girls will be pregnant once before age 20 and that only 38 percent will receive a high school diploma.
In her class, she introduces parenting skills, teaches about coping with an infant, and the total parenting experience. The course is a technical level course on the Family and Consumer Science Pathway.
The baby’s appearance and behaviors replicate those of a real infant and simulate the demands. The baby cries, requires late-night feedings and around the clock care.
The board purchased five Reality Works babies for $3653.
The board also approved the purchase of a new bus for 2011-12 and one billed for the 2012-13 school year.
The board approved the Wilson High School senior trip to San Diego, Calif. There are 13 seniors and five adults going on the trip. The total trip cost is $13,774 which the students have nearly all raised.
Forty iPads were purchased at a cost of $23,000 for the elementary school using rural education money.
Both the Neighborhood Revitalization Plan was approved by Rice and Ellsworth County.
In final business, the board:
•Approved a photo copier rotation
•Heard a report on wind energy and the possibility of the purchase of a full size wind generator.
•Agreed that admittance to all games throughout the district should be free for students of USD 112 when they play each other.
