Barton County Historical Society Village and Museum, 85 South U.S. 281, Great Bend, will soon switch to its winter schedule. It will be open from 1 to 5 p.m. this Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 1-2.
After this weekend, the museum will be closed most weekends until April. The weekday schedule is unchanged, with the museum open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Friday. The museum is closed on Mondays.
This weekend would be a good time to catch a temporary exhibit on loan from Fort Larned, said Beverly Komarek, executive director of the museum. Staff from the Fort Larned Historical Site set up the display, “Buffalo Soldiers at Fort Larned.” The Barton County Historical Society’s own researcher, Karen Neuforth, provided additional information about the Buffalo Soldiers of Fort Zarah, which was located in Barton County.
Komarek said the Buffalo Soldiers exhibit will be coming down soon, as another exhibit honoring more recent veterans will be installed in time for Veterans Day, Nov. 11. Veterans who visit the museum that day will not be charged admission, she added.
Regular admission is $4 for adults 16 years and older. Members of the Barton County Historical Society are admitted at no charge.
The museum is also planning its annual Ghosts of Christmas Past open house. It will take place on Sunday, Dec. 14, with no admission charged that day.
