Big rigs coming through
Trucks operated by Emmert International Engineered Transportation And Rigging of Clackamas, Ore., navigate through the stoplights at 24th and Main Thursday morning, each hauling a 158,700-pound tank bound for the oil refinery at McPherson. The trucks came into town Tuesday and had planned on using 10th Street, but were too large. They are 22-feet tall, which would have been fine, but at over 20 feet wide, were wider than anticipated. That forced a change in plans. They were diverted to 24th Street with plans to take the U.S. 281 bypass, but that was under construction. They had to wait until Thursday for the road to be resurfaced. The operation involved the Great Bend Street Department, the Great Bend Police Department, Midwest Energy, Wheatland Electric and a private bucket truck company hired by Emmert to follow along and lift power lines out of the way.
